About
Mapleglyph is a side project that stayed useful, so it kept getting tagged.
It started as a 200-line script I used while shipping a design system — I needed to know, before swapping a typeface, whether the new file still covered every character our product strings used. The script grew a few flags, then a diff, then a terminal preview, and at some point it was worth packaging.
The goal is deliberately narrow: read a font, answer coverage questions, print them clearly. It is not a font editor, a subsetter, or a renderer for proofs — there are good tools for those (fonttools, hb-shape, pyftsubset). Mapleglyph just does the one check I reach for most, fast enough to drop into a build.
Principles
- One binary, no runtime dependencies, no network calls.
- Scriptable:
--jsoneverywhere and honest exit codes. - Reads files; never writes them.
Contributing
Bug reports with the offending font attached are the most helpful thing — font edge cases are the whole difficulty. Small, focused pull requests welcome. The code is MIT licensed.
